Exact location, viewing instructions and further details can be found in the brochure below.

Needlewood Grove is a rare little gem of a woodland, packing so much into a relatively small area. Not only is there a rich diversity of wildlife, there is access to the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, a feature not often found in woodland, and adds incredible amenity potential. Within easy reach of both the charming town of Redditch and the market town of Bromsgrove, and around 40 minutes from the centre of Birmingham, this woodland is very well connected.

On my last visit I was amazed by the early spring wildlife, from birds including woodcock, nuthatch and tree creepers, kingfisher and woodpecker, to muntjac deer and badgers. Needlewood really is the wildlife lover’s dream!

Whilst the woodland feels tucked away and wild, it is easily accessed via a stone track, or even with your own narrowboat if you have one! (Subject to obtaining relevant permission.) The ground is flat, with some wetter areas and a small stream running to the canal. There is an area of hardstanding in the southeast corner which would make a wonderful area for a picnic, watching the world slide by on the canal, possibly spending many hours fishing from your own spot (subject to obtaining an EA Rod Licence).

The canopy is a mix of sycamore, ash and beech, with holly, hazel and field maple making up the shrub layer. The age class is mostly poll stage/early mature and there is an opportunity to harvest quality firewood from this lot, as well as making provision for some wonderful timber for the future with proactive ongoing management.

In the wetter areas, willow and alder thrive, providing essential habitats to birds, mammals and invertebrates. The woodland floor has a covering of celandine, dog’s mercury and bluebells, giving a brilliant mosaic of colours in the spring and summer.

Our Forester'sThoughts

Harry says...

"There is no hurry to do so, but I would look to clear a couple of the smaller trees to create more open areas within the wood, promoting regeneration of trees and colonisation of wildflowers. This would produce the timber I would need to create some benches or even a small wildlife hide.

I would create a small seating area next to the canal to enjoy some wildlife watching, and many a picnic in the milder months with friends and family.

This is rather special location, and I would be most content to while away the hours here."

Please remember some management operations require approval and/or a licence.
